*The majority of these documentaries are extremely disturbing. Watch at your own risk*
Welcome To Leith - Welcome to Leith chronicles the attempted takeover of a small town in North Dakota by notorious white supremacist Craig Cobb. Not only is it disturbing, but it is quite infuriating.
Murder By Proxy: How America Went Postal - Murder By Proxy: How America Went Postal is a documentary film that examines the phenomenon of spree killing, particularly in a workplace, that became known in the United States as “going postal”. The film argues that the phenomenon originated in the United States Postal Service as a result of hostile work environment following the Postal Reorganization Act of 1971 and then spread to the rest of society.
Aokigahara Suicide Forest - The Aokigahara Forest is the most popular site for suicides in Japan. After the novel Kuroi Jukai was published, in which a young lover commits suicide in the forest, people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year. The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. The authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis, as the forest sits at the base of Mt. Fuji and is too dense to patrol more frequently. The American horror movie The Forest is based off of the history of Aokigahara.
Soaked in Bleach - Tom Grant, a private investigator once hired by Courtney Love, reveals his take on the death of Kurt Cobain. This documentary includes audio recording between Love and Grant from the days surrounding Cobain’s death in 1994.
The Woman Who Wasn’t There - The Woman Who Wasn’t There profiles a New York City woman and 9/11 survivor named Tania Head, who managed to escape from the 78th floor of the World Trade Center, badly injured, and eventually became one of the founding members of the World Trade Center Survivors’ Network. Head’s story is a compelling one—even more so once you learn that none of it ever happened.
Killer Legends - One of my personal favorite documentaries, delving into our collective nightmares, this horror-documentary investigates the origins of our most terrifying urban legends and the true stories that may have inspired them.
Jesus Camp - A documentary on kids who attend a summer camp hoping to become the next Billy Graham. Way more unnerving than it sounds.
Dear Zachary - I don’t think a movie has every made me angrier or sadder. A filmmaker decides to memorialize a murdered friend when his friend’s ex-girlfriend (and suspected murderer) announces she is expecting his son.
The Jeffery Dahmer Files - An experimental documentary that uses archival footage, interviews, and fictionalized scenarios to tell the story of the people around Jeffrey Dahmer, during the summer of his arrest in 1991.
